In 1967, the Chaparral 2F piloted by Phil Hill and Mike Spence was poised for a fantastic race. Qualifying only 0.25 off the pole time despite suffering carburetion problems would have to make anybody optimistic, especially come race day and the engine was dialed in just right!
Hill took an immediate lead and set a race lap time that nobody would best. Four hours later the white #15 Chaparral 2F was dominating the field! As the sun neared the horizon, Hill returned to the drivers seat, replacing Mike Spence. Sadly, nobody informed him of changing track conditions that would catch him off guard and result in contact with a concrete wall that ultimately ended an otherwise spectacular performance.
