The 12 Hours at Sebring in 1968 saw four Lola T70 coupe entries, including the debut of James Garner's two cars racing under the American International Racing (AIR) team banner. The American actor had put together a team of very capable drivers. Despite being a very capable driver himself, Garner preferred to remain behind the scenes.

The beautiful blue #9 car, assigned to Scooter Patrick and Dave Jordan, performed well right out of the box. The American duo qualified the Lola fourth, with a time of 2:50.8. The pole sitting factory Porsche 907, the eventual race winner, was the class of the field with a 2:49.4 lap, while just 0.4 seconds covering the next three: Ford GT40, Howmet Turbine car, and Lola T70.

As the race got underway, a magnificent Porsche vs. Lola battle unfolded.  At the end of the first lap three 907s led from two T70s.  On the second lap, Scooter Patrick moved ahead of the other T70 and also past the third Porsche.  On the third lap he was into second place and challenging for the lead!

On his ninth lap of the demanding Sebring circuit, Patrick got around Jo Siffert's Porsche and into the lead, managing to better the pole qualifying time with nearly a full fuel load and setting a track record!

The blue Lola still led after the two-hour mark, but came to a sudden halt at the hairpin with it's steering disconnected! Patrick heroically retrieved the necessary tools from the pits to effect a repair, but the work cost an hour and all hope. If any hope remained, however, it was dashed for good when a piston broke before the half-way point. The result wasn't ideal, but the Lola T70 Mk III Coupe had showed speed that was impossible for Porsche to ignore.
